Corpse Flower Titan Arum: AKA Stinky Flower

It was that time again for the Fullerton Arboretum Veggiepalooza where you can purchase a wide variety of produce plant such as tomatoes, chili peppers, onion, and herbs. This was my second time going and I was excited to see what was there. Check out my visit last year here. There even was a waterfall near the entrance. [caption id="attachment_18764" align="alignnone" width="600"]Black-Eyed Susan Flowers Black-Eyed Susan Flowers[/caption] There are many beautiful flowers such as this Black-Eyed Susan which I just learned! I had to search online to see what this was called. [caption id="attachment_18774" align="alignnone" width="600"]Our veggie palooza plant purchase Our veggie palooza plant purchase[/caption] Look at all the things we got! A big bag of goodies. After we checked out, I was surprised the Corpse Flower Titan Arum was at the Fullerton Arboretum Veggiepalooza event! I've only heard about it on the news so it was excited to actually see it. [caption id="attachment_18775" align="alignnone" width="600"]Right The Corpse Flower Titan Arum, Left: Dead flower Right The Corpse Flower Titan Arum, Left: Dead flower[/caption] Why is everyone so amused by it? Well it's a large flower where the flowering is a rare event because they don't bloom frequently. They only bloom for a day or two. Another interesting thing about this large flower is the smell. The odor is created to deceive insects that are attracted to the scent of the rotten flesh to visit the flower. Bugs includes beetles, sweat bees, and flies. I was just glad it wasn't blooming while we were there, I can't imagine the smell. Yikes. Veggiepalooza FULLERTON ARBORETUM Vegetable Gardening Event is located at Fullerton Arboretum 1900 Associated Rd. Fullerton, CA 92831.
