Have you heard about Korean Melon (Chameh 참외) before or have tasted it? I usually buy them at the Korean market but it can be found in many Asian markets. When there’s a family gathering or event, I buy them in a gift box set or I buy a few at a time when I want to enjoy some with my family. They make a perfect summer snack because once they’re chilled in the refrigerator, they’re crunchy, crispy, slightly sweet, and refreshing. They are also low is calories and is a good source of vitamin C, potassium, and dietary fiber.
How is it prepared? The skin of the Korean Melon (Chameh 참외) is quite thick so I would advise to peel it with a peeler. I first get a knife and slightly cut each ends of the melons and then use a peeler. Once everything is peeled, cut the center of the Korean Melon (Chameh 참외) in half (lengthwise), scoop out the insides with a spoon, and then cut into bite sized serving wedges. I sometimes like to eat the seeds as well as the pith which is the sweetest part of the Korean Melon (Chameh 참외) where the seeds are attached to. You may either rinse them or eat it as is. I don’t rinse it because it washes out the sweetness from the insides.
How are they stored? They can be stored in room temperature or in the refrigerator and will last only about a week or so. After a week, the skin will become soft and slightly wrinkled and won’t be as crisp as compared to when they’re fresh.
Be adventurous and try a Korean Melon (Chameh 참외) today!
